STACK UP PAPER

Material : Newspaper / Magazine

The paper media has been facing a crisis of decline because of the increase in share of digital media. The reason for choosing newspapers and magazines on behalf of paper media was not only because they contained symbolic meanings of upcycling paper media, but also because we tried to pick the material relating to woods, the topic of the whole project.

We wanted to contain two significant parts of paper media in our work, graphics and sections of stacking paper, because we thought that graphics show fonts and images that communicate events and news at the time, and the sections generated by stacking paper are characteristic. In order to show two symbolic elements, we tried to make newspapers and magazines into paper cubes which is able to show sections and graphics at the same time. The gathering of paper cube have a possibility of forming a large board and turning into a table. The shape of the table was completed by weaving the frame and then inserting the paper cubes.

SOBAN

Material : Wood / 3D Printing plastic

'Soban' is an attachable leg device which was reinterpreted from traditional Korean tray called 'Gaedari Soban(Dog-legged Soban)', allowing typical plates we see around assign another function as of a tray with certain height.

As we look around at our homes, there are many existing and used pieces that only serve as one meaning of function. Besides the time of serving that particular one function, each of the pieces has no other meaning than a simple object just sitting there rest of the time. Allowing to add another function to a piece will have more possibility to use it more frequently. With that said, we have selected a wooden plate that can be easily found around and decided to apply another function to it. Inspired by traditional Korean tray called 'Gaedari Soban(Dog-legged Soban)', legs to elevate the plate as to add another function of tray have been applied. While in this process of work for developing legs, new technology of 3d printing method has been engaged. Legs of soban have been modeled in Rhino 3D and 3d printed with plastic material, which give the contrast of materiality and form.

SPACE TOOLS FROM THE FLOOR

Material : Wood Flooring

The basic elements of the space structure are floor, wall, pillar, opening and the like. Among them, the floor is a structure that horizontally divides the space for living and working. It also supports loads and transmits them to pillars and walls. It may also serve to connect pillars and walls tightly. Most indoor functions are done on the floor. The type of flooring is also various. There are concrete, stone, tiles, etc. In the interior of the space, trees are mainly used. Trees are used as foundations and sometimes used for final finishing. The type of wooden floor is diverse. Oak, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, Chestnut, Rosewood. In this work, I tried to make space tools using various tree floors.

We combined four kinds of discarded wooden floor and bronze mirror. Mirror is a material that projects and reflects objects, and trees have the property of converging heat and moisture. The combination of the two materials complements and contrasts each other in one product. After crossing wooden floor to multiple layers, we set up lighting inside. The shape of the light changed according to the viewing angle and directed the composition like a picture frame.

SEIN BAUM

Material : Plywood Acrylic

Plywood is basic material that make up spaces. It is hidden from scenery, but has their own importance and necessity. This work gives formal and semantic identity by self-structuring and externalising the internal structural entity of plywood. Also, it is of great value to recycle plywood because it is a major waste material that is mainly generated in the interior construction site.

The shape and arrangement of cells forming the basic unit of wood is symbolically expressed to return its natural properties to the processed plywood.

The work was made using gaps in symbolic unit objects to fit them in. It reminds us of the array of cells by creating partition walls through regular repetition. Lighting was developed through the process of disassembling and reassembling parts of the wall. one type [floor type] is atypical combination of units, and another type [pendent type] is regularized combination of unit objects. Like this, various designs are possible through various combinations of units. In addition, each piece could be combined with acrylic units, which allow the separation and connection of space to appear on the partition, and lighting was produced to control the amount of light through acrylic units.
